Prairie Dawn Bison T-Shirt

We rose before dawn, racing the sunrise to the north side of the mountain range. Somewhere out there was a herd of bison—and we had only a few minutes to find them.

We didn’t know exactly where the bison herd would be—or whether we’d find them before the light changed. We only needed a few shots, but they were important ones: the opening scenes of The Snow Day, a film that was due in just a few weeks.

Then the sun broke over the mountains.

Golden morning light swept across the prairie, revealing the herd grazing beneath the Bridgers. For a few remarkable minutes, everything came together—the bison, the mountains, the light.

I sketched this bull while savoring the moment after we got the shots we needed. The herd didn’t linger. Before long, they rumbled across the prairie toward greener pastures, leaving behind tracks in the grass—and an image I wanted to remember.
