Run Outside & Offline
When I first designed Play Offline, I was working my way through a series of trail-running peaks around Snoqualmie Pass—steep, craggy routes climbing toward some surprisingly alpine terrain just outside Seattle.
I ran with poles and often got strange looks from hikers wondering why I was moving so fast—and why I was so sweaty.
There was a practical reason.
I was researching and completing every trail for my guidebook Beyond Mount Si—70 great hikes within 85 miles of Seattle. At home, my wife was taking care of our young twins, so on the harder mountain routes my goal was simple: get up, get down, and get home by lunch.
Thus, the running.
Today, trail and mountain running have exploded in popularity, and I understand why. There’s an intense focus that comes from moving quickly through wild terrain. Your attention narrows to the trail, your breathing, the next step, the next summit. For a while, the plugged-in world disappears.
That idea became Play Offline.
A reminder that sometimes the best connection is no connection at all.
